A defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the possible security risks posed by Chinese-made vehicles, and staff have been advised to avoid talking about classified information in any vehicles.
Safety Advice for Defence Personnel
During a recent appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD officials have been told not to discuss classified information while riding in Chinese vehicles.
The minister stated that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however noted that security is a concern in every modern cars.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any car, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all vehicle, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Security Background
The revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and cause disruption to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
This wider security situation underscores the significance of strong protocols and caution in all areas of official activities, from transport use to discussions habits.
