Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a significant prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a demand to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
